Tapping into Giant King Grass Growth Potential
With access to a land bank of over 10,000 hectares, Asia Platinum Capital is now in the process of cultivating 1,230.53 acres (or 498 hectares) of state land in Sabah for its first phase. This land is to be transformed into a large-scale commercial plantation of Giant King Grass (miscanthus giganteus) -- a perennial grass with bamboo-like stems that can grow to heights of 3 to 4 metres (13 ft). Its ability to grow on marginal land with low fertiliser needs, its water efficiency, non-invasiveness, as well as significant carbon sequestration, and high yield are among the main reasons why this crop was selected. Once cultivated, the GKG crop keeps growing for the next 6 to 7 years, and harvesting can be done constantly every 3 months.
Giant King Grass (or GKG) has been used as raw material for solid biofuels that can be burned directly, or processed further into pellets. This supports Malaysia's renewable energy priorities emphasising a cleaner environment with reduced carbon emissions.
Giant King Grass has an excellent energy content of 18.4 MJ (megajoule) per dry kg HHV equivalent to 4,400 kcal/kg, 7,900 btu/ib. This is the simplest and fastest way to partially clean up coal power plants and introduce renewable biomass fuels on a large scale. The demand for biomass is likely to grow further as more carbon-intensive industries shift to increased use of biomass to set off carbon benefits globally.
Nothing goes to waste with GKG: it actually provides multiple opportunities as feedstock for liquid biofuels, coal co-combustion/replacement for electricity generation, and animal feed. The economic advantages of the GKG project for the local communities in the Ranau district must also be highlighted; with its potential to create a multiplier effect to bring much needed jobs and economic prosperity to the area.
In light of its huge potential as a renewable energy crop, interest in and demand for GKG has increased globally. Early entrants to this sector will of course reap the most benefits, especially with fewer competitors in the market currently. This is why Asia Platinum Capital has selected GKG as its leading agricultural project to set the pace towards a healthy return on investment.
